THE Voice Independent Music Awards final nominee list was unveiled earlier this week by founder Siva Chandran, who describes it as giving a "true" and "just" representation of the Malaysian music scenario.

"After reviewing more than 300 songs, 50 hours of judging, debating, and tabulating of the scores, we are satisfied with the final VIMA nominee list which we truly believe represents the music industry as a whole," said Siva, who is also editor and founder of Voize.my (www.voize.my), a lifestyle entertainment portal that initiated the awards.

"The Voize team left no stone unturned as we combed through amateur indie acts, bedroom producers, college acts and, of course, the who's who of the indie music scene. It's a one-of-a-kind nominee list because you have indie acts from Rock, Pop, R&B and Reggae to Electronica, Dance and Hip-hop."

Siva said the toughest challenge was judging the Rock category, as there were a great number of songs vying for the awards titles under it.

"Perhaps next year we may be able to break the genre down further. It's been a gruelling three days for the team, but it's been worth it. The whole of Asia is looking to us to benchmark indie music, and the VIMA is Asia's first indie music awards, so we're elated to have come this far."

Indie act Estrella leads the way with seven nominations, followed by hip-hop artiste Altimet, who ties with Melissa Indot. Both have earned six nominations each.

Another Hip-hop act, Malique, and Rock acts Estranged and One Buck Short, nabbed five nominations each. Deja Voodoo Spell garnered four.

There were also plenty of surprise nominees, including reggae act Pure Vibracions (four nominations), Transient Vortex (four), Vassanth (four), Global Battle of the Bands runner-up Aisunam (three), Luscious, Infinatez, Five and Dime, the blues-funk act Curtis Blues Review, dance act Nicky C, DJay Pee, Prema Yin, Reza Salleh, Karen Nunis, and the very low-profile electronica extraordinaire, Silent Keat.

"The awards will be presented on Jan 17 at Titanium Club, Petaling Jaya. We expect around 400 guests, including celebrities and visitors to Voize.my.

"The event is by invitation only," said Prem Anand (known as Premo in music circles), who is marketing executive of Voize.my. "We will be conducting a contest for our readers to win exclusive passes to VIMA via our facebook site and Voize.my," he added.

Voize.my (www.voize.my) is also the organiser of another upcoming indie award, AVIMA 2009 (Asia's First Indie Music Awards), involving 12 countries. It will be held at the same venue on March 21.
